Pre-work on my Sonoffs

I wanted to share something I’ve had on the back burner for a little while – Sonoff smart switches – both the basic switch and the fan controllers. A few weeks back, I got the itch to start monkeying with them.

In order to prepare for the weekend when I do a rash of installs, I wanted to pre-configure the units. In order to do that, I cut up a couple of appliance drop cords and used them to connect a Sonoff to a lamp (and also to a box fan for the fan modules).

I connected each of them to my main Wi-Fi network (not the VPN) and verified that I was able to control them as expected using the app.

Obviously, I plan to install aftermarket firmware on some of them, maybe even custom firmware I write myself.

As I mentioned earlier today in the Smarter Home Club on Facebook, I saw a very exciting post for a rapid development framework for the ESP8266. I have had some driver issues with my existing dev kits and have an Adafruit Huzzah coming in Friday. I’m ready to get to work on the ESP-12!
